How can international shipping become climate-neutral? The PtX Lab Talk #19 explores the negotiations on the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Net Zero Framework, the first global plan to guide the shipping sector towards climate neutrality.

Experts discuss the latest developments following the IMO's ISWG GHG 22 intersessional meeting, the postponed decision on the regulatory framework, and the question of how ambitious a global climate protection programme can be when economic interests and geopolitical conflicts collide. The session highlights the specific concerns of developing countries and small island developing states (SIDS), asks how a fair balance between industrialised and developing countries can be achieved, and looks ahead to MEPC 85 (Marine Environment Protection Committee) in December 2026.

The talk took place on 24 September 2026 and provides insights into which steps are needed now to decarbonise shipping, and what this means for the use of climate-neutral fuels.
